Life @ DoubleCloud As An SRE
Hi, my name’s Maria and I’ve been a SRE (Site Reliability Engineer) here at DoubleCloud since September last year. I’ve always been excited by new tools and technologies, I just love learning new things every day.
Hi, my name’s Maria and I’ve been a SRE (Site Reliability Engineer) here at DoubleCloud since September last year.
For the last five years I’ve worked in both DevOps and SRE roles, with my career starting straight out of university.
I’ve always been excited by new tools and technologies, I just love learning new things every day.
Not just learning though… teaching as well.
When I became a middle DevOps engineer I actually joined an online school to teach other engineers all about DevOps, Kubernetes and everything in between!
I always wanted to do more with my career than just coding, which is where DoubleCloud comes into things. I love coding but I also wanted to do more challenging and interesting things and Doublecloud gives me that every day.
DoubleCloud made my onboarding process really smooth and pleasant, with an initial task to get me into the swing of things gently, learn who everyone is and get used to how we do things.
Along the way I had all the support I needed from my manager and colleagues.
I think that’s one of the reasons I wanted to work at a start-up.
The mentality just feels different.
I like making an impact and have always believed a start-up environment is created to challenge you every day.
I think it’s really cool that DoubleCloud set’s the direction but then leaves it up to the engineers to decide how best to achieve it. I was especially excited to get my hands dirty with some real coding in Golang.
I really like the language and have wanted to work more closely with it for a while like debugging applications and writing our internal automation tools.
One of my favorite things about working for Doublecloud is that we build highly demanding products on top of open-source tech like ClickHouse® and Kafka®… with very skilled development teams.
Short answer… I really like the people here!
Outside of the work you’ll usually find me trying to keep up with everything that is going on in the IT domain. And you’ll definitely find me at this year’s Kubecon!
I like contributing to open-source projects in my free-time, especially in the projects that I can use in my day-to-day life. I also record podcasts about DevOps and post the coolest articles in my Telegram channel.
When I’m not doing all that I’m a huge fan of traveling, playing squash and learning new languages (no… not just programming ones!)
Given how busy I keep myself, I think something that would surprise a lot of my colleagues is that I also make time to binge watch new and old TV shows… even if I have to stop up till 3am in the morning to do it!
Finally, to finish this article off, the marketing team thought it would be fun to ask if I was organizing a dinner party and could invite any three famous people (alive or dead) who would it be and why?
I’d definitely invite some of the cast members from a very famous Netflix’s TV show — Orange Is the New Black.
This show was a pure blast and changed a lot of things, starting from the streaming industry in general right through to how diversity can look like.
I’d want to hear stories about their experiences and how it impacted their lives.
