Life @ DoubleCloud as a CTO
Hi, my name’s Vladimir, and I’m the CTO here at DoubleCloud. I’m meant to be using this time to talk about my onboarding process (so all you awesome developers looking to work with us know what to expect) but I’m one of the co-founders.
Hi, my name’s Vladimir, and I’m the CTO here at DoubleCloud.
I’m meant to be using this time to talk about my onboarding process (so all you awesome developers looking to work with us know what to expect) but as I’m one of the co-founders, starting the company back in the Feb of 2021, there wasn’t an onboarding process, just my fellow co-founders, some laptops and an idea.
However, I couldn’t be more proud of what that idea has turned into over the last couple of years.
I started my career in data back in 2012, working as a DBA. I was responsible for moving the Yandex.Mail service from Oracle to PostgreSQL (in fact you can still see the talk I did on it here).
In 2016 I switched it up and started to work on DBaaS (Database-as-a-Service), first with postgres and later with other databases. AFAIK it was the world’s first managed ClickHouse.
From 2018 to 2021 I was responsible for product and engineering of Yandex Cloud Data Platform. When we became the leader on the local market I decided that I want to make something similar but for the global market and from the ground up. That’s how DoubleCloud came up.
I know it sounds a little contrite, but my favorite thing about working at DoubleCloud has to be the team we’ve built here. The team is cool for two reasons: everyone’s incredibly professional with a high level of expertise and we’re building a cooperative culture where everyone helps each other. Both things are especially important in a fast-growing startup where many processes and internal documentation don’t keep up with changes.
Outside of work I’m married with two children (who take up a lot of my spare time) but I’m also a big fan of playing chess, listening to rock music and chilling out on a beach.
I think that something that would surprise a lot of my colleagues is that my login (d0uble@) doesn’t have anything to do with DoubleCloud… I’ve used it for years as a reminder to do everything I do twice as well as others. But nobody believes me so it’s an endless source of jokes.
Finally, to round this bio off, the marketing team thought it would be fun to ask me if I could invite any three famous people, alive or dead, who would it be and why?
I think my first choice would need to be Michael Stonebraker as he’s probably one of the most influential people in the data world and I’d love to chat things over with him (and show him the DoubleCloud platform).
Next would be Elon Musk as I think he’s really interesting and he will boost our marketing a lot :)
My final guest would be Henry Ford as I think he probably started the biggest revolution and cultural shift of the previous century.
